Etiyan was born to a wealth aristocratic family who made their fortune from a small fleet of merchant vessels. As the empire expanded, so too was the need for more and more ships of trade. The family business boomed in the sea of trade. His parents, being ever so pragmatic, wanted their son and heir to take over the reigns once they would retire. But it was not to be, as Etiyan was far too energetic to sit behind volumes of accounting journals or trade contracts. Etiyan’s fascination clearly lay elsewhere.
Etiyan was sent to Moroviati, the academy of gentlemen as was fitting a young gentleman of his station. Etiyan was a diligent and accomplished student, but it was not his academic record that brought him notice. Etiyan’s inhuman agility was discovered by the the school’s fencing instructor, and brought to the attention of Lord Montoya, the viscount’s champion. For four years Etiyan was sent to Lord Montoya’s manor to practice and hone his fencing skills. When his schooling career concluded, Etiyan was an accomplished swordsman, the finest the school has seen in its recorded 171 year history.
His father introduced him to his world of commerce soon after his graduation ceremony. But the thought of sitting behind a desk for the rest of his life was for too insufferable. After three months of pure unadulterated boredom, Etiyan took his first step to freedom.
One of the cleaning maids wearily approached his parents while they were having their usual breakfast in the garden pergola. With trembling hands, she handed them a letter she had found on Etiyan’s pillow. It read as follows:“Dear mom and dad. I’m afraid you shall not like what you are about to read, but to leave without an explanation would be inexcusable on my part. As much as I love you, I cannot bear the thought of not seeing the greater world with my own eyes, legs and sweat. I know that talk of this topic has caused you much grievance in the past, but I would never be my real self living in your dreams. I must do this lest my soul wither with regret. I hope you can understand, and I shall keep writing to keep you aware of my well being. Your loving son, E.”
Etiyan left with the mere possessions on his back, and boarded the first ship (one of those actually owned by his family) towards his destiny; where ever it may be.
